Colombian lawmakers approved June 14 the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the United States that was signed by the government last year. The trade pact must now be approved by the Constitutional Court.

The Senate approved the agreement with 55 votes in favor, three votes more than the requirement.

The opposition Alternative Democratic Pole party and some lawmakers from the Liberal Party abstained from the vote, saying that the FTA will have devastating economic effects on Colombia’s already poor campesinos and small businesses.

Trade Minister Luis Guillermo Plata, said that the government was pleased with the approval and said that Colombian officials will lobby in Washington so that the agreement is approved by the US Congress, where it faces strong opposition by Democratic lawmakers.
